Behind the walls: Wells almshouses to open their gates for one day only

One of Wells' most historic hidden gems will throw open its doors this month – and you don't need a ticket to get in.
The City of Wells Almshouses will host a free open day on Saturday 21 June, offering a rare chance to step inside its medieval buildings, explore the tranquil gardens, and soak up some live music along the way.
Tucked behind St Cuthbert's Church and accessed via Priest Row, the almshouses date back centuries – and still provide sheltered housing for older residents. But for one day only, the public will get full access to the beautifully kept grounds, the Guild Room, and the newly-renovated ancient chapel.
From 11am to 4pm, there'll be hot lunches, home-made cakes and puddings, and performances from Somerset Flutes (12pm–1pm) and The Grey Dogs Jazz Band, who'll be swinging their way through the afternoon from 1.30pm to 3pm.
Entry is free and all are welcome.
