Another win for The Sheep & Penguin as Wells pub scoops CAMRA award

t's official – Wells has one of the best pubs in the region, and it's got the certificate to prove it.
The Sheep & Penguin on Tucker Street has been crowned Rural/Borders Pub of the Year 2025 by the Bath & Borders branch of CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) – just a year after reopening its doors.
The award was handed over on Saturday 24 May, with CAMRA chair Trevor Cromie presenting the honours to pub manager Jan Forster and company director Sam James in front of punters and pints.
If the name doesn't sound familiar, that's because the pub was known for decades as The Mermaid – until a full-blown transformation in 2023 saw it reborn with a new name, fresh food offering, boutique rooms, and, crucially, a proper pint.
Since then, it's racked up praise and plaudits, including a CAMRA Pub Design Award in 2024 for its stunning renovation – turning what was once a crumbling eyesore into one of the most stylish spots in town.
Now serving up to four real ales at a time, The Sheep & Penguin has quickly become a favourite among locals and ale lovers alike.
CAMRA said the pub's commitment to quality and atmosphere made it a worthy winner – and judging by the Saturday celebrations, Wells agrees.
