Wells is well known as a filming hot spot, with The Libertine and Elizabeth: The Golden Age among those shot here plus, of course, the cult classic Hot Fuzz.

Numerous locations were used for filming Hot Fuzz, including the Market Place, The Crown, the Little Theatre and St Cuthbert's Church.

And now police officers had a real-life Hot Fuzz moment after they were called to rescue a swan from the roadside.

Nottinghamshire Police were called to the A52 in Beeston, Notts., by concerned members of the public yesterday (April 15).

PCs Simon Widdowson and Natalie Wilkins found the bird in the road and managed to catch it with much less difficulty than Simon Pegg and Nick Frost's characters in the movie.

PC Widdowson wrapped it in his police jacket before putting it in the patrol car boot and releasing it unharmed in a pond.

Police Sergeant Kulvinder Dosanjh, of Notts Police, said: "The officers weren't led on a wild goose chase and quickly located the animal swanning about.

"PC Widdowson, also now known as the swan whisper, used all his experience to ensure a happy ending.

"I've been told it resembled that hilarious scene in the film Hot Fuzz.

"He conquered his fear and managed to wrap the animal in his police jacket before taking the animal to a safe location and releasing it.

"You could say, he was as graceful... as a swan... sorry."

Web users also compared the scenes to the hit 2007 comedy/action film, which was directed by former Wells student Edgar Wright, on social media.

Ash Butler said "Incoming Hot Fuzz jokes!" while Symon Mosforth-Pedlow added: "Real life hot fuzz here lol."

Emma Jayne Burton quoted the film and added: "good luck catching those swans then' ...'it's just the one swan actually."

Micheal Topham wrote: "Swanning around like that. People might think it's a bit quackers. It's great that he did that."
