Wells City are through to the second preliminary round of the FA Vase after an epic 5-3 win over Millbrook AFC that went to extra time and saw Harry Foster score a hat-trick.

The game started in an exciting way as after two minutes, a Charlie Crook cross from the right hand side deceived everyone and hit the bar before being hooked clear.

After 14 minutes, Tom Hill did well to to make some space for himself and unleash a 25-yard rocket that just went wide.

Millbrook opened the scoring on 15 minutes after some slack defending allowed the Millbrook striker to go one on one with Kieran Hodges with Hodges doing well to save the initial shot but another Millbrook striker was quickest to react and slotted in well from a tight angle.

Foster got his and Wells' first four minutes later when a goal kick from Hodges was inadvertently headed on to Foster from a backtracking Millbrook centre midfielder and, still with a lot to do, Foster brilliantly lobbed the keeper to pull Wells level.

Millbrook were back in front two minutes later and once again Wells fall asleep at the back. A lack of communication allowed the Millbrook striker to once again go one on one and this time he beat Hodges at the first attempt with a calm finish.

The end-to-end action continued on 23 minutes when another Hodges goal kick found its way to Foster and he had a terrific effort on goal which was matched by a brilliant save from the Millbrook keeper.

On 25 minutes Wells had back to back corners with both having around three goal line clearances and somehow Wells not drawing level, bodies everywhere and in the end well defended by Millbrook.

Wells equalised just before half-time when a quality Tom Hill corner was powerfully met by Ross Padfield leaving the keeper with no chance.

Into the second half and on 57 minutes and after just coming on, Craig Herrod made an immediate impact as he split the defence open and freed Foster but the latter put his shot wide.

After 59 minutes a long range screamer from the Millbrook midfielder produced a great save from Hodges.

On 67 minutes great interplay between Herrod and Foster saw Herrod go one on one with the keeper but his low shot is well saved by the feet of the keeper.

There was nothing of note for the final 20 minutes and the game ended 2-2 and went into extra time.

On 99 minutes a great ball in from the Millbrook winger saw the Millbrook centre back head wide from six yards.

After 103 minutes, a Herrod corner for Wells was headed wide by Dale Hunt, and then two minutes later a Mark Randall free kick was met by Amghar but his shot hit the side netting.

Wells took the lead after 112 minutes when Ben Robertson did well to win the ball back high up the pitch. He fired a pass into Foster who did well to control and slide the ball under the on rushing Millbrook keeper to give Wells a 3-2 lead.

The lead only lasted for five minutes, though, as a fortunate touch from the Millbrook centre midfielder found its way to the Millbrook winger who smashed a half volley from the edge of the area which rocketed into the top corner to draw the game level.

In a breathless finale, on 119 minutes and after great work between Herrod and Foster and some backs against the wall defending from Millbrook, Foster did well to keep the ball in a dangerous area and his pullback is met by Padfield who fired the ball into the top of the net with his weaker left foot and give Wells a 4-3 lead.

Foster made the game safe right at the death with a great solo effort that saw him get behind the Millbrook back line and then round the keeper before sliding the ball home for his hat-trick.

Millbrook had the better of the first half but Wells grew into the game and deserved the victory. It was an epic game played in the right way and was a great advert for non-league football.

Wells will now play Newton Abbott Spurs at home on Saturday 14th September in the second preliminary round of the FA Vase.
