Wells City secured a comfortable 3-0 win at home to Devizes last night, coming to life for a devastating 20 minutes at the end of the first half.

The first chance wasn't until 23 minutes when Harry Foster got to the byline and his cut back was met by Tom Hill whose cross shot found Harvey Hadrill but he failed to finish from six yards.

Just a minutes later, a poor back pass from Devizes saw Foster round the keeper but his second touch was heavy and he over-ran the ball when he should have scored.

On 27 minutes a free kick by Ross McErlain from 20 yards clipped the side netting.

The first goal for Wells came on the half hour mark when McErlain carried the ball from deep before playing a defence splitting through ball to Craig Herrod who calmly slotted the ball into the far corner.

Wells' second came just two minutes later when Herrod took a corner, it was headed back across goal from McErlain and timing his run to perfection was Charlie Crook to power a header home.

After 35 minutes McErlain fed Foster whose shot went just wide from a tight angle.

On 39 minutes good link up play between Hadrill and Herrod saw the latter play Foster through but his effort was smothered from close range.

A minute later, McErlain towered above everyone from a Hill free kick but his header landed on the roof of the net.

After 42 minutes a great ball in from the right by Crook was headed over by Ross Padfield.

On 44 minutes a long range rocket from Kieran Davis went just over from 30 yards.

On the stroke of half time Wells got their third when a short corner saw Hadrill whip a dangerous ball into the box that was headed down by Padfield for Foster to smash home from 10 yards.

The first action of the second half was not until 73 minutes when great wing play by Herrod saw him glide past two defenders before pulling the ball back to McErlain who brought a good initial save from the keeper before Foster followed up and his header was brilliantly saved from point blank range.

After 78 minutes a good ball from Hill over the Devizes back four set Foster free but his effort came back off the base of the post.

On 84 minutes a Herrod corner was met by Crook but his header went the wrong side of the near post.

With a minute to go, Wells won a penalty when McErlain was fouled in the box, but the resulting penalty from Hill was superbly saved by the Devizes keeper.

This was a game that failed to excite other than the final 20 minutes of the opening half. Wells were dominant throughout without having to go up through the gears, nevertheless a professional performance and another three points.

Wells next host Portishead at the Athletic Ground this Saturday (February 8) with a 3pm kick off. Wells drew 1-1 with them a few weeks ago so this should be a good game.
