It was a good performance from Wells City on Saturday and they should never have lost but they didn't take their chances and saw Ben Amghar sent off in a 2-0 defeat to Wincanton Town.

In only the second minute, a quick Alex Camm breakaway freed Harry Foster down the right but with Craig Herrod in acres of space in the middle of the Wincanton box Foster failed to pick him out instead putting the ball out for a goal kick.

On 5 minutes, another good bit of individual skill from Camm saw him evade two defenders before unleashing a rocket from 25 yards that brought a good save from the Wincanton keeper.

Wincanton come to life after seven minutes when a sharp counter attack saw their number 11 cut in from the left and fire a shot across goal forcing Andy Head into a great save, before Mark Randall was able to hook to safety.

After 13 minutes, Herrod cut inside from the right and his shot was narrowly deflected wide with the keeper left stranded.

A half cleared corner on 19 minutes fell to Randall 25 yards out, he cleverly flicked the ball over the on-rushing defender before sending a half volley just over the bar.

On 22 minutes, a Camm corner was met at the back post by Foster and his pull back was met by Dale Hunt but he found the side netting from eight yards.

After 26 minutes, a twisting run from Herrod and a fierce shot brought out another good save from the Wincanton keeper.

Then on 39 minutes and against the run of play, a Wincanton corner was half cleared and once the ball was been put back into a dangerous area a bit of pinball ensued before the ball was poked home from three yards, making it 1-0 to Wincanton at the break.

A minute after the restart, another run from Herrod saw him get to the edge of the area, but with the keeper off his line his lofted effort just missed the top corner.

Herrod was having an excellent game, and on 48 minutes he put in a delightful cross from the left which just evaded the boot of Foster and the Wincanton defender breathed a huge sigh of relief as his sliced clearance went inches wide.

On 52 minutes, a Herrod free kick again went agonisingly close.

After 65 minutes, a 25-yard free kick from Foster was well saved by the Wincanton keeper especially as the ball bounced trickily in front of him.

Two minutes later, a Camm corner was met firstly by Hunt but this was blocked en route to goal and then a couple more follow ups were blocked before Wincanton somehow hooked the ball clear.

Wincanton doubled their lead after 71 minutes, when a 25-yard free kick was beautifully steered top corner by the Wincanton captain, once again against the run of play.

Amghar was shown a straight red card two minutes later, after lashing out.

With five minutes to go, Wincanton got the ball into the net again from a deep cross from the right but the striker was well offside and the goal disallowed.

In the last minute, Herrod beat the offside trap and with the Wincanton keeper in no man's land, his shot from outside the box at an open goal drifted wide.

This was a game that Wells dominated for the most part, up until the red card but once again their inability to convert chances has cost them.

If they start to finish these chances they should bounce back sooner rather than later but they face a stern test when they travel away to Corsham this Saturday with Corsham having just beat Cheddar 3-2.
