Yatton 41 – Wells 29

It was a much changed Wells side that travelled to Yatton yesterday (November 16) for their tenth league game of the season and it was rather an inauspicious start, giving away a penalty within 30 seconds of the start.

In fact penalties dominated the first 20 minutes, the home team incurring the wrath of the referee twice as many times than the visitors.

The opening quarter was also a scrappy affair, with lots of errors, but Wells did open the scoring, Aaron Cook going over from close range.

Yatton immediately hit back with a try and conversion, but back came Wells, Ewan Blair getting the try.

The referee showed a yellow card to the home team and Wells took advantage, Sean Heggarty going over. Due to stoppages the half went on and on.

The clock showed 42 minutes when Yatton snatched a try and fully 49 minutes when they scored again, with a conversion. This put them ahead 19-15 at the interval.

The first ten minutes of the second period was a bit of a disaster for Wells. Injuries had caused a number of re-shuffles and Yatton helped themselves to three tries, plus two conversions to virtually seal the game.

Wells were not done however, firstly Cameron Blair went over and ten minutes later Ali Blair scored a wonderful try. His meant that all three Blair brothers had scored in the same game.

Aaron Cook converted twice to take Wells to their 29. Yatton did have a late penalty to take the tally to 41.

At least Wells had the satisfaction of a losing bonus point, but Yatton have leapfrogged them in the table.

There was also the unusual site of three sets of brothers in the Wells squad. I have already mentioned the Blairs, but there also Sam and Ben Garrett, and Ben and Alex Knight.

Unusually, this week just one of the three Paynes was available, Tom.

This Saturday Wells will be looking to bounce back when they entertain Weston Hornets 2nd team at Wells. Kick off 2.30pm.
