YMCA Mendip chief executive Karen Deverell has received a special national award for her service to the local community.
The Red Triangle Award is a special award which is submitted without the nominee's knowledge and the winner is announced as a surprise at the awards ceremony, held this year at London venue 8 Northumberland Avenue and hosted by TV presenter Miquita Oliver.
It is one of two distinctive awards where winners are chosen by judges and is not part of the public vote like the remaining 11 award categories which are up for grabs each year.
TWO businesses in the Wells area have struck gold in the Bristol, Bath and Somerset Tourism Awards.
Wells Cathedral won Silver in the Access and Inclusivity category, while Wookey Hole Caves' Wild Wookey Adventure Caving received Bronze in the Tourism New Business Award.
The Full Stop Cafe at Bookbarn International at Hallatrow won Silver in the Cafe/Tearoom of the Year category.
THE cost of vandalism in Wells in the past year has been put at nearly £30,000.
"Wells City Council budgets are under strain due to the amount of vandalism and graffiti in Wells," said the council's responsible financial officer and open spaces officer Steve Luck.
HUNDREDS of people gathered near the War Memorial in St Cuthbert's Churchyard for the two-minutes' silence and wreath-laying ceremony on Remembrance Sunday, and lined High Street to watch the annual parade and salute.
At 11am on Remembrance Sunday, the last of nearly 8,000 poppies made by nearly 4,000 local schoolchildren were planted at The Bishop's Palace.
CONDITIONS were perfect for this year's Wells Carnival which brought a bumper number of spectators out on to the streets.
There were hardly any hold-ups to delay the procession, and those watching said the standard of entries was exceptionally high.
THE popular Wells Christmas Market will be back in December for its third year.
More than 100 traders will fill Wells Market Place with festive stalls, offering a range of gifts, crafts and food and drink produce, giving shoppers and visitors to the city the chance to pick up some last-minute gifts and indulgent treats.
A WELLS community is taking part in an Advent event with a difference this Christmas.
"There are an array of window themes to look forward to," said organiser Shirley Offer.

Fire engines from Wells, Shepton Mallet and Glastonbury were sent to a report of a smell of burning within a commercial property at the above location.
On arrival the crews confirmed that this was coming from a small fire in a light fitting which the crews extinguished by isolating the electricity supply. They investigated using a triple extension ladder and a thermal imaging camera.
The crews left duty of care with people on site who contacted a local electrician to attend.
SUPERGROUP The Traveling Wilburys will be remembered at a charity concert being staged in Wells on Friday, November 30.
The band will be recreating the sounds and songs of the late 1980s supergroup which brought together five of the greatest names in rock music history: George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne.
Critics have said the band captures the style and sounds perfectly and, with their own added humour, gives audiences an evening to remember.
