Wookey Hole Caves has unveiled a new £250,000 immersive projection experience bringing cave legends, geology and exploration stories to life.
Wookey Hole Caves has launched a new immersive projection experience designed to bring the famous Somerset attraction's legends, geology and history to life.
The new installation forms part of the guided cave tour at the historic cave system near Wells and follows a £250,000 investment into projection mapping and sound technology.
Rather than using traditional screens, the projections are mapped directly onto the cave walls and natural limestone surfaces across three underground chambers.
The experience begins in the Witch's Kitchen, where visitors are introduced to the legend of the Witch of Wookey Hole and the folklore surrounding her story. According to the attraction, the sequence explores her origins, the misfortune she was said to bring to local people, her confrontation with Father Bernard and her rediscovery in 1912.
In the Great Hall, the focus shifts to the geological history of the caves and the role played by the River Axe over millions of years. The installation also highlights stories of early human activity, cave bears, underground whirlpools and the explorers who ventured beneath the Mendip Hills.
The final section takes place in the Cathedral Chamber and centres on the cave divers who explored the underground networks using early homemade diving equipment.
Chris Goodchild, General Manager at Wookey Hole, said: "Wookey Hole has always represented a deep-seated sense of adventure, mythology and magic. The very caves beneath us hold so much history and heritage. This new experience is our way of, quite literally, bringing a whole new light to these magnificent structures.
"We're not just projecting pictures onto rock. The caves become the stage, each story is a moment of true spectacle and wonder, making these ancient natural structures feel truly alive."
Each projection sequence lasts around two minutes and has been integrated into the existing guided cave tour.
Wookey Hole said the experience was designed to work alongside the natural atmosphere of the caves while helping visitors better understand the site's folklore, history and geology.
Projection mapping is a specialist technique that allows moving visuals to be projected onto uneven surfaces, including rock formations inside the caves.
