WI wipes the slate clean as Wells park signs get a fresh look

The entrance signs at Wells Recreation Ground are set to be removed and refurbished as part of a community-led project supported by Wells Monday WI. The initiative aims to restore the signs while preserving their historical significance and improving the park's appearance.
The work is now underway, with the signs undergoing cleaning, repairs, and repainting before being reinstalled by 15 April.
Wells Monday WI is playing a key role in the project, offering volunteers and resources to assist with the restoration.
Wells Monday WI members have expressed their enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the historical significance of the signs, which tell the story of the Bishop's Barn and Recreation Ground, gifted to the city by Bishop Lord Arthur Hervey in 1887.
The refurbishment also aligns with the Women's Institute's commitment to environmental issues, as recycling the metal signs will reduce the need for plastic alternatives. The National Federation of Women's Institutes (NFWI) actively supports campaigns on climate and environmental sustainability, which are core values of the organisation.
On behalf of the Outside Spaces committee, Chair Cllr Deborah Orrett thanked the WI and the Outside Spaces team for their contributions to the project, adding that the recreation ground remains an important space for residents.
The work is part of ongoing efforts to maintain and improve Wells Recreation Ground, ensuring it remains a well-kept and welcoming space for the community.
