What's on: Wells weekend has Palace parties, tiny art and more

Wells has a packed few days ahead, with Party at the Palace bringing country music, 90s nostalgia and a kids' pop party to The Bishop's Palace, while the Hilliard Society Miniature Exhibition opens at Wells Town Hall. There are also events across Shepton Mallet, Glastonbury and Street, because apparently the local diary has looked at a quiet weekend and taken it personally.

On Friday, 3 July, Wells gets the weekend going at The Bishop's Palace with Party at the Palace - Country Show!. Gates open at 7pm, with the show starting at 7.30pm and finishing at 10.30pm. The opening night features the Country Superstars Theatre Tour, with tribute performances celebrating Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, Johnny Cash, Garth Brooks, Lainey Wilson, Luke Combs and more. Tickets are listed as £25 for adults and £15 for children aged five to 17, so cowboy hats remain optional but, frankly, hard to resist.

Also from Friday, 3 July, AutoFest UK returns to the Bath & West Showground for its 10th anniversary show, running until Sunday, 5 July. The event includes modified cars, indoor show halls, super and hyper car displays, drift passenger rides, RC drifting, drift simulators, vehicle safety displays, traders, a show and shine, VIP lounge and an inflatable city for children. That is quite a lot of horsepower before anyone has even found the food.

In Shepton Mallet, Friday also brings the final listed date for Women's Soulfired Sessions at Soulfired Sauna, Rock Farm, Windsor Hill Lane. The women's sauna session runs from 10.30am to 11.30am and is described as a dedicated space to move between heat, cold and rest. If your week has been held together by caffeine and crossed fingers, this may be the gentlest possible intervention.

Over in Glastonbury, Ambient & Immersive Weekender (3–4 July) – Assembly Rooms begins on Friday, 3 July and continues on Saturday, 4 July. The two-night event brings together electronic music, live performance, film and immersive visual environments. Friday features David Harrow, Youth and Joe Muggs, while Saturday includes Fractals in Space, Lords of Misrule, Gazillion Chillion, Dawn of Reality, Old Nic and MRez. It is probably not the weekend for anyone who likes their music strictly rectangle-shaped.

For something quieter, Harry Brockway: Ways With Wood Exhibition continues at Somerset Rural Life Museum in Glastonbury until Wednesday, 2 September. The exhibition celebrates the life and work of Glastonbury-based artist Harry Brockway and includes wood engravings, woodcuts and wooden sculpture. Normal museum admission applies, with the museum open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm. A strong choice for anyone who wants craft, detail and absolutely no need to shout over a drum machine.

On Saturday, 4 July, the Hilliard Society Miniature Exhibition opens at Wells Town Hall and runs until Saturday, 11 July, although it is closed on Sunday, 5 July. Entry is free. The exhibition features miniature paintings, drawings, sculptures, glass engravings and painted silver boxes, with at least one artist demonstrating each day. Proof, if needed, that small things can still make people stand around saying "how on earth did they do that?"

Saturday also sees Party at the Palace - 90's night! at The Bishop's Palace in Wells. The line-up includes East 17, Dave Finnegan's Commitments, Sonia, Wells City Band and In Like Flynn. Expect nostalgia, singalong moments and the sudden realisation that the 90s were not, in fact, ten years ago. Time is rude like that.

At Priddy Village Hall, An Evening of Poetry Music & Song takes place on Saturday, 4 July. The event is listed as a fundraiser for the Hands Up Project, supporting displaced children of Gaza. Further timing and ticket details were not confirmed in the listing.

In Street, Live Music from The Tracks Band comes to The Unity Club on Saturday, 4 July. The band is described as being back by popular demand, with a night of music, dancing and singing, open to all. Sensible shoes may be wise, although nobody is admitting that until the second song.

Also on Saturday, 4 July, the Dorothy House Women's Walk: United in Care takes place in Bath. The fundraising event runs from 3pm to 9pm and offers a 5km accessible route or a 12km challenge, with funds supporting Dorothy House. It is a little further from the patch, but still one for local supporters of the hospice to have on the radar.

On Sunday, 5 July, The Bishop's Palace hosts Party at the Palace - Kids Pop Party!. Gates open at 4pm, the show starts at 5pm and it finishes at 7pm. Pop Queens Live will perform hits inspired by some of today's biggest pop stars, with tickets listed as £18 for children aged five to 17, £12 for adults and £50 for a family ticket covering two adults and two children. Parents may pretend they are only there for the children, but we see you.

Also on Sunday, Leigh on Mendip Car Show and Village Day takes place at Leigh on Mendip Recreation Field. The day starts with a car show before village day activities, with breakfast barbecue baps, food and drinks available, plus a reptile display, fun dog show, bouncy castle, harness goats, attractions and stalls. That is a lot of village day for one field to contain, but Leigh on Mendip appears to be giving it a determined go.

On Monday, 6 July, Sustainable Street & Surrounds Monthly Meet-up takes place in the back room at Fondo Lounge in Street from 6pm to 7pm. The monthly meet-up is for exchanging ideas, finding out what is happening around environment and sustainability initiatives, and meeting similarly motivated people. A useful hour for anyone who has ever looked at the recycling bin and thought, "there must be more to it than this."

Also on Monday, 6 July, RAFA Mid-Somerset Branch holds its July meeting and presentation at Wells Golf Club, Blackheath Lane, Wells, at 11am. The presentation is titled "Epic Delivery Flight of an HS 748 from Christchurch New Zealand to Southend UK, his Last Flight as an Airline Captain" by branch member Dave Willmott. The meeting will include a short business discussion and an optional lunch and drinks from the club menu and bar afterwards. The group says RAFA members, current and former RAF personnel, reserves, Commonwealth air force personnel, the RAF family and members of the public who support RAFA aims are welcome.
