Miniature art hidden away in the heart of Wells
Readers may be unaware that Wells Town Hall is the annual location of the Hilliard Society of Miniaturists' International Miniature Exhibition. This exhibition is a hidden gem attracting entries and visitors from across the United Kingdom and further afield. Annual exhibitions have been taking place in the heart of Wells for over 40 years.
The Hilliard Society was founded by Sue Burton, a gallery owner in Wells, and miniaturist Rosalind Pierson (RMS, HSF, MASF), Its Inaugural Exhibition held in Wells in May 1982.
The name of the society was chosen as Nicholas Hilliard was a prominent West Country Elizabethan miniaturist portrait painter who was born in Exeter in 1547.
The art of miniature painting is many hundreds of years old, originally being a way of recording someone's portrait before photography was possible and has a fascinating history. Miniature paintings and drawings are generally no larger than 4.5 x 6 inches and sculptures under 10 inches.
If you would like to learn more, the Hilliard Society is offering a unique opportunity to take part in a full day's Miniature Painting Workshop. The intention of the workshop is to introduce the technique of miniature painting to beginners, as well as helping artists who may already have some experience but would like to brush up on their skills or try out new ideas. There will be experienced, award-winning miniaturists on hand to tutor – this year including Michael Coe RMS HS, Linda Kracht RMS HS and Claudia Haesen HS ARMS.
The Workshop will take place on Saturday July 4th 2025 from 10.00am – 4.00pm in the Town Hall, Wells. The fee for the day is £50 which will include complimentary tea and coffee. There will also be time to visit this year's exhibition in the main Hall. To reserve a place and for further information please get in touch.
Subjects include landscapes, portraits, still life, wildlife and much more. Mediums are broad ranging from pencil crayon, graphite, oil, acrylic, watercolour and vitreous enamel. Spectacular fine detailed bronze sculptures, glass engravings and painted silver boxes.
Come and be inspired! There will be at least one artist demonstrating each day.
The exhibition open Saturday 4th July to 11th July, CLOSED Sunday 5th July. FREE ENTRY. Artworks will also be available for purchase online; more information can be found at: www.hilliardsociety.org
