Wells Cathedral Oratorio Society: Rutter Magnificat and Fauré Requiem

Saturday, 6.45pm, Wells Cathderal.

Faure said of his Requiem "Everything I managed to entertain by way of religious illusion, I put into my Requiem, which moreover is dominated from beginning to end by a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest" For Fauré death was a "happy deliverance, an aspiration towards happiness above, rather than a painful experience.

Rutter said of his Magnificat "This was my first large scale choral work since I wrote my Requiem, and I wanted it to be absolutely as different as it could possibly be. So, I chose the words of the Magnificat which expresses the Virgin Mary's sense of joy when she learned that she was going to give birth to Jesus. And of course, Mary is most celebrated and revered and enjoyed in sunshine countries like Spain, Mexico, and Puerto Rico, so my Magnificat is an outdoor Magnificat where the sun shines from beginning to end."

Come and experience the peace and serenity of this marvellous music in the beautiful setting of Wells Cathedral.
