Residents of Wells can now look forward to a new dining option, as Somerset Council has granted planning permission for a traditional Turkish kebab shop to open in the city's High Street.

The application, submitted by Ramazan Ibrahim, will see the transformation of a Grade II listed building, previously occupied by Subway, which has been vacant since 2019.

The approved plans involve minor internal alterations, including lightweight partitions, repairs to wall linings, and a new countertop, with the exterior changes limited to new signage.

Despite one objection raised concerning the potential impact on the area's historic character, traffic obstruction, and concerns about odours and antisocial behaviour, the council has decided to move forward with the project.

The objector, a local business owner, expressed concerns about the impact on nearby residential and business properties, citing issues ranging from the smell of cooking to the nature of the business potentially leading to littering and late-night disturbances.

However, the council's decision indicates confidence in the new kebab shop's positive contribution to the local economy and the diversity of food options in Wells.
