Wells City Council is on the hunt for a new Town Crier – and they want someone with a big voice, big personality and a love for local history.

The historic role, which dates back to the 1300s, will see the successful applicant don traditional robes, ring a bell and shout out civic announcements at events across the city.

It's a voluntary role, but comes with an honorarium and expenses. The new crier will represent Wells at markets, royal visits, mayoral functions and festivals, becoming a familiar face (and voice) for locals and tourists alike.

Applicants will need to be confident in front of a crowd, willing to perform in all weathers, and happy to wear full regalia. A flair for performance and a passion for heritage are a must, and knowing your Wells history will be a bonus.

The job comes under the Mayor's office and includes occasional travel to town crier competitions and civic events.

Applications close on 30 September 2025, with in-person interviews on 10 October. To apply, contact Haylee Wilkins at [email protected] or call 01749 673091.
