A recently established walking group in Wells aims to support men throughout Somerset in tackling mental health challenges.

Part of a broader initiative known as Men Walking and Talking, the Wells chapter is led by Nathan, a law lecturer and newcomer to the Somerset area.

Founded by Dan Reid in 2021, Men Walking and Talking has rapidly expanded to 17 groups across five counties, making Wells the latest addition. Nathan was inspired to set up the local group following his personal experiences with addiction and depression.

He sees the walks as an avenue for social connection and exercise, as well as mental health support.

Nathan noted that the walks offer an informal setting that allows men to discuss their emotional challenges more openly. "Creating a social context helps people feel at ease and willing to share their feelings," he said. "It breaks down the echo chambers that men sometimes find themselves in."

The group congregates outside St Cuthbert's Church every Monday at 7 pm. From there, participants enjoy a picturesque walk around Wells, passing landmarks like the Bishop's Palace and the moat. Newcomers are welcome to attend, with no prior notification needed, although they can contact Nathan in advance if they wish.

Besides the physical walks, Nathan has also established a WhatsApp group to keep the community engaged and supportive outside of their weekly meetings. "People have been discussing their struggles and concerns," he added.

Although the Wells group is in its infancy, Nathan is optimistic about its growing impact and attendance. "Mental health affects not only the body but also the mind and people's self-confidence," he emphasised.
