Wells turns rainbow-coloured as Pride returns with drag, DJs and a city-wide celebration

Wells is going full rainbow this summer — and everyone's invited.
Wells Pride is back on Saturday 14 June with a jam-packed day of music, theatre, open mic, DJs, and one very fabulous drag quiz. And after the roaring success of last year's debut, organisers say this time, it's going even bigger.
Forget stuffy committee-run schedules — this year, venues across the city have stepped up to host their own events, turning Pride into a full-on community takeover. You'll find something happening in every corner of Wells, from the Market Place to the Rec, coffee shops to pubs — all united by one message: everyone's welcome here.
Things kick off at 10am with live music in the Market Place, thanks to Portway Music School. DJ Funked Dimension takes over The White Hart at 11am, and again at 5pm — because one set just isn't enough.
The Pride March — sponsored by Wolf Barbers — sets off at midday, and once the flags have flown, you can head over to the Rec for a special Pride performance of The Taming of the Shrew, courtesy of Wells Theatre Festival.
There's double trouble at 2pm, with open mic sessions at Strangers with Coffee and Local Ride History readings at the Town Hall, complete with a Q&A.
And when the sun goes down? The wigs go on. The Drag n Quiz night at 7.30pm, sponsored by Last Dragon Tattoo, promises a glitter-soaked finale to the day — camp, chaotic and utterly brilliant.
Behind it all is Councillor Georgie Robbins, the driving force behind Wells Pride.
"We were incredibly pleased and humbled after the success of last year," she said. "This year is about building on that and bringing the community together in a really special way."
Last year's Pride saw crowds spilling out of the Bishop's Barn, rainbow flags flying on Cathedral Green, and local businesses stepping up with themed nights, stalls and entertainment. This year, organisers hope even more people will get involved, with a new online portal created by Scream Digital to help venues register and join the celebration.
If you're planning your own Pride event, you can add it to the official schedule via the Wells Pride website — and receive branding, promo support and a big community cheer in return.
But for the rest of us? Just turn up, be loud, be proud, and be part of it.
