Wells named second most charitable city in the UK – and locals say it's just how they're built

City donates £3.3m a year – with two-thirds of residents giving to good causes

Wells has been named one of the most generous places in Britain – and no one who lives here is the least bit surprised.

A new report by the Charities Aid Foundation has ranked Wells as the second most charitable city in the UK, based on the share of average income given to good causes. With residents donating a staggering £3.3 million in the past year, the city came just behind St David's – but well ahead of much larger urban areas.

The report found that 66% of Wells residents had donated in the past 12 months, with giving accounting for 1.55% of average income. Wells also punches above its weight when it comes to the number of local charities, boasting 80 registered organisations per 10,000 adults.

According to the CAF report, this kind of local generosity plays a vital role in keeping communities strong – and in Wells, it's already making a visible difference.

That support has helped fund everything from the West Front conservation at Wells Cathedral to the Vicars' Close restoration and the ongoing Grand Organ Appeal.

A spokesperson for the Cathedral said: "This generosity allows places like Wells Cathedral to continue thriving, preserving our shared heritage."

The report also found that 18% of local residents rely on charities for support, while over half (51%) use them for enjoyment – such as community groups, arts venues and social spaces.

Neil Heslop OBE, Chief Executive of the Charities Aid Foundation, said the findings show how local giving makes a national impact:

"Every one of us instinctively understands the power of local connection. It is the pull of the place where we grew up or where we call home, or simply the drive to help those in need on our doorstep.

"The most impactful philanthropists and social investors, as well as the charities they help, are embedded in local places and local networks. Their giving plays a vital role in building more resilient charities, so they can continue to work at the heart of our communities, improving outcomes and strengthening social cohesion."

Despite rising costs, Wells residents continue to dig deep – not because they have to, but because it's what this city does.
