Wells to mark 80th anniversary of D-Day with special event

The Wells Branch Royal British Legion is commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day with a special event at Wells Town Hall on Saturday, 8th June, starting at 10.30am.

History Day – Somerset at War will explore how the Second World War impacted the county, particularly focusing on Wells.

Visitors will have the opportunity to read personal accounts of wartime life and view memorabilia donated by the public.

The event will also feature 1940s entertainment, with live music from The Berkeley Bluebirds at 2pm. Entry is free.

D-Day – 6th June 1944 – marked the Allied invasion of Normandy. This year, beacons will be lit across the country on 6th June to commemorate the landings.

Locally, a beacon will be lit at Horrington Primary School, West Horrington, at 9.15pm. Before it is lit, there will be a reading of the International Tribute. This event is a collaboration between the school and St Cuthbert Out Parish Council.

Wells Town Crier Len Sweales will join town criers worldwide in making The D-Day 80 Proclamation on 6th June

He will read the Proclamation from the balcony of Wells Town Hall at 12pm.
