The TGJones store on Wells High Street will close permanently on Saturday, 19 September, with a closing-down sale now under way.

The shop, at 45-47 High Street, only recently changed from WHSmith branding to TGJones following the sale of WHSmith's high street business to Modella Capital.

Signs have now gone up in the Wells branch telling customers that "everything must go", with discounts of up to 50 per cent being advertised on selected items.

The sale includes a range of stock from across the store, including stationery and confectionery, as the branch prepares for its final weeks of trading.

The Wells shop had already been confirmed for closure as part of TGJones' national restructuring, but at that stage no final trading date had been announced.

Its future had first been thrown into doubt earlier this year when plans emerged to close around 150 stores across the country as the retailer sought to cut costs and reshape its estate.

TGJones has blamed a combination of falling sales, inflation, weaker consumer spending, increasing competition from online retailers and rising operating costs for its financial difficulties.

The closure comes little more than a year after planning documents revealed the former WHSmith store would be rebranded as TGJones.

Other Somerset branches have also been affected by the restructuring, including stores in Frome and Clevedon.

WHSmith's travel business, which operates shops at railway stations, airports and other transport locations, is separate from TGJones and is not affected by the high street closures.
