A finalist from this year's Landscape Artist of the Year is bringing a new exhibition to Wells this month.

Artist Tom Winter will show work at the Bishop's Palace from Saturday, 19 September until Saturday, 21 November, following his appearance as a finalist in season 11 of the Sky Arts competition earlier this year.

Winter has worked as a freelance painter for nearly 30 years and is based at his studio at Hengistbury Head in Dorset.

His work spans landscapes, portraits, figurative pieces and still life, using oil on board alongside printmaking, graphite studies and pen-and-ink drawings.

A recurring theme across his work is the character of people and places, particularly the way light can alter the feeling of a landscape or scene.

Winter is also a lifelong admirer of Caravaggio, with the artist's dramatic use of light and shadow influencing his own approach.

The exhibition at the Bishop's Palace will give visitors the chance to see that work away from the television competition setting, with pieces exploring both landscape and the relationship between physical surroundings and light.

Winter's appearance in Wells follows a high-profile year after reaching the final of Landscape Artist of the Year, the Sky Arts competition which sees artists tackle locations around the country under time pressure.

The exhibition runs from 19 September to 21 November 2026 at the Bishop's Palace in Wells.
