A police event in the marketplace in Wells over the weekend raised awareness of domestic abuse and provided support to those living in fear of violence and coercion.

Collaborating with Krav Maga Somerset Self Defence Classes, PCSO Coral Forde organised the transformative event "Come Meet Us" at Wells marketplace, shedding light on the insidious issue of domestic abuse and offering essential resources.

Domestic abuse encompasses a range of harmful behaviours that can occur within intimate relationships, involving physical, emotional, psychological, or financial abuse. It affects individuals of all genders, ages, and backgrounds, causing immeasurable harm to the victims and perpetuating cycles of trauma.

During the event, PCSO Forde engaged community members with compassionate guidance and shared vital information on initiatives like Clare's Law. This crucial safeguarding measure empowers individuals to request information about a partner's history of domestic abuse, enabling informed decision-making and potential protection from harm.

People were educated on strategies to enhance personal safety in public spaces, with Coral introducing them to valuable tools such as personal safety apps like HollieGuard. By equipping individuals with practical resources, she aimed to empower them to recognize warning signs, trust their instincts, and take proactive measures to safeguard their well-being.

The event prominently showcased a range of resources and materials aimed at helping individuals identify different forms of abusive relationships and emphasised the importance of seeking support and understanding the options available to victims. By providing guidance on how to exit abusive situations and minimise the risk of harm, she instilled hope and agency in those in need.

A noteworthy feature of the event was the involvement of Somerset Krav Maga, promoting their dedicated ladies' self-defence classes. People were invited to experience a complimentary taster session held at The Blue School on Wednesday and Friday evenings. These empowering classes equip women with practical self-defence skills, bolstering their confidence and resilience.

It is estimated that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men will experience domestic abuse in their lifetime, making it likely that we all know someone who may be suffering behind closed doors.
