Wells skatepark bid smashes through £233,000 mark

A community campaign to replace Wells' ageing skatepark has smashed through the £233,000 mark in a huge boost for the project.
The fundraising drive, led by Wells Skatepark Community Group, aims to replace the old wooden facility at Lovers' Walk near Waitrose with a modern concrete skatepark designed for skateboarders, BMX riders, scooter users, roller skaters and wheelchair users.
Organisers said the £233,000 total includes money already raised as well as pledged support, underlining growing backing from local businesses, community groups and residents. The next big target is £250,000 - a figure the group says would unlock further funding opportunities.
Beverley Smith, trustee of Wells Skatepark Community Group, said: "We're incredibly grateful for the support we've received so far. It's been amazing to see so many parts of the community come together behind this project."
Recent supporters include Winsley White, LOAF, Wells Academy of Theatrical Arts, Long Story Bistro, Wells Skating Club and Buk Vintage - a young local entrepreneur and scooter rider - all of whom joined the project's Mark on the Park sponsorship campaign.
The group says the new skatepark is about far more than ramps and rails. It is intended to create a free, accessible space for young people from Wells, Street, Glastonbury and surrounding villages - giving them somewhere to be active, build confidence and feel part of their community.
Beverley added: "This project is about much more than a skatepark. It's about giving young people a space to be active, build confidence and feel part of their community."
