Wells sellers urged to stay alert over fake cash Facebook Marketplace scam

Residents in Wells are being advised to stay alert when using Facebook Marketplace, after police received several reports of a scam involving counterfeit money.
The fraud, already reported in Weston-super-Mare, Bath and Bristol, sees scammers arranging to buy high-value goods and handing over fake banknotes during collection.
Items like laptops, mobile phones and games consoles have all been targeted. Police say the scam relies on rushing sellers into quick deals, sometimes even offering more than the asking price.
A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: "These notes can look convincing, and people often don't realise until it's too late. We're asking people in Wells to be extra careful and take sensible precautions."
Sellers are advised to take photos of their items, including serial numbers, and to verify buyer information where possible. Avoiding solo meetings and delaying handover until payment is verified are also recommended.
