Wells says farewell to parking in the square – and hello to coffee in the sunshine

The pedestrianisation of Wells Market Place is set to continue after city councillors voted unanimously to make the current arrangements permanent.
The historic square, located in front of the Town Hall, was previously used as a car park on non-market days.
Temporary traffic orders introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic transformed the area into a pedestrian zone, allowing cafés to expand their outdoor seating and offering more space for residents and visitors to enjoy the city centre.
With three consecutive temporary traffic orders now exhausted, Wells City Council has agreed to submit an application to Somerset Council to make the pedestrianisation permanent.
If approved, the decision will mark a significant shift in how the centre of Wells is used, prioritising pedestrians and hospitality over parking. In place of parked cars, the square now features planters, bollards and seating areas, creating a more open and accessible space overlooked by the Town Hall, Bishop's Palace and Cathedral.
The twice-weekly markets will continue as normal, with traders permitted to access the area by vehicle to set up and pack away stalls. Loading and unloading for local businesses will also remain in place.
The proposal to retain the pedestrianised layout follows positive feedback from both residents and local traders, many of whom welcomed the changes brought in during the pandemic.
Somerset Council will now consider the application for a permanent traffic regulation order.
