The Old Chapel Bakery in Wells could be converted into three one-bedroom homes under a fresh planning application.

The proposal, reference 2026/1435/FUL, relates to the Union Street property and was registered on 28 July. Somerset Council has not yet made a decision on the scheme.

The latest application seeks permission to convert the building into three one-bedroom residential units. It follows an earlier 2023 application which proposed changing the ground floor from commercial use to residential use to create two homes.

That earlier application was supported by Wells City Council, which recommended approval when it considered the plans in February 2023. A subsequent proposal sought to increase the number of homes from two larger units to four smaller units while retaining the existing building fabric.

Somerset Council refused the four-home scheme, prompting an appeal to the Planning Inspectorate. That appeal was dismissed in February 2025, leaving the earlier two-unit proposal as the previous approved basis for residential use at the site.

The new application now proposes three one-bedroom homes instead. It remains at the registered stage while Somerset Council considers the plans.
