Wells Royal British Legion is calling for new members and volunteers to help carry forward more than a century of support for the Armed Forces community. The branch, which has been active since the charity's founding in the 1920s, announced the appeal on Monday, 15 June 2026.
The Wells branch is seeking people to take on committee roles, help organise local events and activities, and support regional beneficiaries. The opportunities include leadership and administrative roles for those who want to help shape the branch's future.
Branch leaders are also keen to make clear that people do not need a military background to get involved. According to the branch, a large proportion of its current committee are not veterans, but local residents with a personal or family connection to the Armed Forces, or simply a wish to give something back.
Alistair McBride, chairman of the Wells RBL Branch, said: "We are incredibly proud of our deep roots here in Wells, spanning over a century of dedication to the Armed Forces Community. Joining us is a chance to ensure our support for the Armed Forces community continues to grow and thrive.
"Whether you want to take on a leadership role on our committee, help us run local welfare events, or simply give a few hours of your time in the autumn, your contribution matters and makes a meaningful difference. You don't need a service background to stand with us—just a desire to help."
The branch said committee roles and active volunteering are suited to people who want to organise events and support local beneficiaries. These roles require standard Royal British Legion membership.
Poppy Appeal volunteers are also needed from late October to early November to help coordinate and distribute poppies across the city. This role does not require RBL membership, and volunteers can give as much or as little time as they have available.
Anyone interested in supporting the Wells branch is encouraged to get in touch with Wells Royal British Legion. The branch said the aim is to expand the support it provides to the Armed Forces community locally.
