Wells residents urged to have their say on local service devolution
Wells City Council is calling on residents to share their views on the potential impact of devolution, a process that could see local services transferred from Somerset County Council to more localised councils.
The move comes as Somerset County Council faces financial pressures, and there is growing interest in handing responsibility for certain services to City, Town, and Parish Councils.
If approved, devolution would allow Wells City Council to take charge of services that are essential to the community, ensuring they continue to be delivered effectively. The council views this as a rare opportunity to not only safeguard these services but also explore how they can be improved for future generations.
Cllr Stewart Cursley, Chair of the Finance and Council Matters Committee, highlighted the importance of this initiative, saying: "This is a significant undertaking. We must be prepared to manage services effectively for our residents, businesses, and visitors. However, it's equally important that our priorities align with those of the community, which is why we are seeking public input."
Wells residents are encouraged to share their thoughts on the potential transfer of services and its effects. Information about the services under consideration is available in the council's document "What does Devolution mean for you?"
Haylee Wilkins, the City Council's Devolution Officer, stressed the importance of engaging with the community on this issue: "We are working to a very tight timeline and need to hear from as many residents as possible. Please return the enclosed proforma to the City Council or join us at the public meeting on Thursday, 26th September at the Town Hall at 7pm."
Residents have the chance to shape the future of local services in Wells by making their voices heard.
