Residents across Wells and the wider Somerset area are being reminded to ensure they are registered to vote in the upcoming Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) election.

The PCC plays a crucial role in overseeing the local police force, focusing on community priorities. This significant election will include constituencies across Bath & North East Somerset Council, Bristol City Council, North Somerset Council, Somerset Council, and South Gloucestershire Council.

Key Deadlines and Registration Information:

The deadline to ensure registration on the electoral roll is swiftly approaching, set for midnight on Tuesday, 16 April. Somerset officials are urging residents, especially those who have recently moved, to register promptly to ensure their participation in the democratic process. Registration can be completed in just five minutes online at www.gov.uk/registertovote.

Furthermore, for those preferring to vote by mail, the application for postal voting closes at 5pm on Wednesday, 17 April.

Voter ID Requirements:

In a significant update to voting procedures, individuals wishing to vote in person must present acceptable photo ID at polling stations. For voters lacking suitable identification, applications for a Voter Authority Certificate are open until 5pm on Wednesday, 24 April.

Residents have several options for casting their vote: in person at polling stations, by post, or through a proxy vote. The deadline to arrange a proxy vote, allowing someone trusted to vote on one's behalf, is also on Wednesday, 24 April.

Will Godfrey, the Police Area Returning Officer for the Avon and Somerset Police Area, highlighted the importance of these elections: "These elections are an important opportunity to make your voice heard and have a say on who represents you on issues that directly affect day-to-day life here in Somerset. If you're not registered by 16 April, you won't be able to vote. Voters will be required to take photo ID with them when they vote in person at the polling stations."

Residents who have turned 18 since the last election or those who have recently moved are particularly encouraged to verify their registration status. Existing registrations remain valid provided there have been no changes in details.
