Wells has been ranked as one of the worst places in the UK for graduate retention, with many young people leaving the area after completing their education.

A recent study by student recruitment marketing agency Think Orion found that only 30.25% of graduates who sat their GCSEs in Wells remained in the area after finishing university. The findings highlight the ongoing 'brain drain' affecting rural towns, where young professionals are choosing to relocate rather than return home.

Why are graduates leaving Wells?

Despite a high adult employment rate and an average annual salary close to the UK average, Wells struggles to retain graduates. The study suggests that limited career opportunities, lack of higher education institutions, and access to industries requiring specialist skills may be key factors driving young people to larger towns and cities.

A spokesperson for Think Orion said: "Many rural areas, including Wells, struggle to retain graduates because they simply don't offer the same career prospects as larger towns and cities. Young people often move away for university and find that job opportunities, transport links, and social amenities elsewhere make returning home less appealing. Without investment in graduate-friendly employment, this trend is likely to continue."

The impact on Wells

The low retention of graduates has wider implications for the local economy and workforce development, with fewer young professionals settling in the area to contribute to business growth and innovation.

While Wells offers a high quality of life, the challenge remains in creating opportunities that encourage graduates to build their careers locally, rather than seeking work elsewhere.
