Garden centre between Wells and Glastonbury wins approval for new shop

A long-running garden centre between Wells and Glastonbury has been given the green light to rebuild its shop.
Somerset Council has approved plans to replace the existing retail building at Browne's Garden Centre on Woodford Road, with a new structure and a separate metal storage shed.
The proposal will see the current shop building demolished and replaced with a new retail building on the same site.
Planning documents said the existing structure — originally built when the business moved to the site in the 1970s — has reached the end of its lifespan.
The replacement building will continue to operate as the garden centre's main retail space.
New storage building
As part of the approved scheme, a new metal storage shed will also be constructed to the south of the site.
Documents submitted with the application said the shed would provide improved storage and replace several smaller storage areas currently scattered around the garden centre.
The building is designed to allow forklift access and to improve the organisation of stock and materials on site.
The replacement shop building will be timber clad and designed to remain similar in scale to the existing structure, with a low-pitched roof.
Developers say the aim is to modernise the ageing building while keeping the character of the long-established garden centre.
