Wells has reason to celebrate, with a city pub earning a place in the 2025 edition of the Campaign for Real Ale's (CAMRA) Good Beer Guide, the UK's best-selling beer and pub guide.

This year's guide, which reviews 4,500 of the finest pubs across the country, features 102 pubs from Somerset, with Wells' own Crown Inn making the prestigious list.

Located in Town Hall Square, the Crown Inn is highlighted for its rich history and excellent range of well-kept ales. The pub serves Butcombe Original, Cheddar Ales Potholer, and Sharp's Doom Bar, making it a must-visit spot for locals and visitors alike. CAMRA commends the Crown Inn's separate bar, which overlooks the bustling marketplace and offers a cosy, welcoming atmosphere just a short walk from Wells Cathedral. The pub also boasts a unique piece of history, as William Penn, the Quaker and founder of Pennsylvania, once preached outside the building in 1685.

A CAMRA spokesman added: "The Crown Inn deserves its place in the Good Beer Guide 2025. It is our belief that if a licensee serves an excellent pint of real ale, then everything else in the pub, including customer service, quality of food, and atmosphere, are likely to be of an equally high standard."

Joining the Crown Inn in the guide is The Lantokay in Street and other well-known Somerset pubs such as the Ring of Bells and Perkin Warbeck in Taunton, and the Quay Inn in Minehead.

The Good Beer Guide is now available for purchase on CAMRA's website, offering beer enthusiasts a definitive guide to the best pints in pubs across the UK.
