The Wells Neighbourhood Policing Team has responded to rising tensions among businesses in the High Street area of Wells, following an increase in shop thefts during the summer months.

In recent weeks, the Wells Neighbourhood Policing Team has identified and is investigating a man and woman suspected of shoplifting.

The team actively supports affected businesses to safeguard against future losses.

Two separate theft reports, both valued at under £10, have resulted in the identification of the suspects. The first offender has received criminal justice sanctions and now has a record on the police crime recording database. The second offender has apologised and paid for the stolen item, but the Neighbourhood Team is still considering further sanctions and is supporting the local store with banning letters.

Coordinating with Somerset County Council, the Wells Neighbourhood Policing Team is making full use of 24/7 CCTV coverage, aiming to provide the best possible protection for both businesses and the public.

Over the past 28 days, Avon and Somerset Constabulary have received nine reports of shop theft in Wells City, with five relating to High Street/Queen Street businesses. Out of these five reports, three investigations are ongoing, one has ended with positive intervention, and one has been filed due to insufficient evidence.

The Wells Neighbourhood Policing Team said that they take a firm stance on shoplifting and encourages businesses to report theft of any kind via the correct reporting pathways. This essential information allows the police to conduct targeted patrols, request support from specialised departments, and build an understanding of who is being affected and how frequently.

"We appreciate that reporting takes time, but it's crucial in enabling us to respond effectively to these incidents," a Wells Neighbourhood Policing spokesperson said. "We're committed to high visibility in the affected areas and will deal with any present offences. Our top priority is the safety and security of our community and business owners."

Wells residents and visitors are encouraged to remain vigilant and support local law enforcement by reporting any suspicious activity.
