Wells Nub News recently hit 80,000 page views on our site. To mark this occasion, we wanted to write an article that celebrated all things Wells.

You can see why so many film crews come to Wells to make their movie and TV magic – its friendly, welcoming population mixes perfectly with architecture that people travel from all over the world to see.

England's smallest city boasts many landmarks, but there is a vibrant beating heart behind it leading to festivals of literature, comedy, food, art and theatre.

The cathedral itself stands at the eastern end of the city centre and is a unique two-tower design fronted with carvings.

It houses bespoke scissor arches in the main nave, plus it has a 14th century chain library to explore.

Other highlights at the cathedral include the octagonal Chapter House and Jack Blandiver, who strikes the bell with his hammer every 15 minutes.

Through the Market Place you will find the Bishop's Palace, which has been at the heart of the city for more than 800 years.

The palace gardens are home to the natural springs that originally gave the city water, and hence why this community is called Wells.

Beside Wells Cathedral you will find the unique Vicars' Close, which is the most complete example of a medieval close in the country, and the Wells and Mendip Museum, where the whole family can learn through innovative and entertaining exhibits.

The Market Place, with markets twice a week, the narrow streets and a mix of building styles all reflect on the continuing development of the city throughout the ages.

When we asked Wells residents to sum up the city in three words we had many positive responses, including "really friendly people", "unique majestic gem" and "enchanting, intriguing, magical".

Of course, there are concerns in Wells like so many other places about the number of houses being built without the infrastructure or employment to back them up.

The city is probably best summed up by chairman of Wells Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, Robert Powell.

He said: "Wells is a wonderful city, with an excellent community spirit and architecture that people travel from all over the world to see.

"However, like many tourist destinations and places that are growing with new housing, it has its challenges.

"Parking is a major problem, particularly at peak season, and the infrastructure is struggling to cope with the increasing population."
