Wells and Mendip Museum is currently assembling a team of volunteers for an exhibition scheduled for February 2024.

The exhibition, titled "Smashed in the Cellar," will feature a valuable painting on loan from the Goldsmiths Company in London, alongside an extensive collection of historic pottery.

The museum spokesperson shared, "We want it in Wells so that it can co-star in a major exhibition alongside a remarkable collection of 500 years of pottery that was excavated from the museum garden in the 1990s." This collection boasts an array of items, ranging from 15th-century chamber pots to exquisite Chinese export ware tea sets.

"Smashed in the Cellar" aims to showcase these historic pieces while also presenting a contemporary perspective through the work of local artist Duncan Cameron. The exhibition is set to highlight the contrast and dialogue between past and present artistic expressions.

Volunteers are invited to participate by 'minding' the painting during the exhibition, which runs from 16th February to 13th April 2024. The museum is offering two-hour slots on Tuesdays to Saturdays, between 10 am to 4 pm.

This volunteering opportunity offers a unique chance to engage closely with the museum's collections and its community of dedicated volunteers. It is also an excellent way for individuals to interact with visitors and learn more about the rich history and cultural heritage of Wells.

Those interested in volunteering or seeking more information are encouraged to contact the exhibition manager Vicky Dawson at [email protected].
