Wells MP Tessa Munt has backed calls to cap housing developments around the edge of England's smallest city, arguing that Wells should retain its unique boundaries and character.

Responding to local concerns, Ms Munt agreed with resident Miranda Frank, who said, "Wells seems to be joined up to all the local villages." Ms Munt added, "England's smallest city needs space – each village is unique."

The MP's stance comes as the Labour government proposes to raise Somerset's house-building targets by 46%, aiming for 3,891 new homes each year. While Housing Secretary Angela Rayner has stressed these targets are essential to address housing needs, Ms Munt criticised the impact of rapid expansion and unfinished developments, with missing roads and green spaces.

In the BBC Radio Somerset interview, Ms Munt also addressed support for children with special educational needs, calling the issue "enormous" and pressing for urgent reform. She voiced concern over the recent removal of winter fuel payments for pensioners, suggesting higher-rate taxpayers should be targeted first to minimise the impact on vulnerable residents.

Additionally, Ms Munt revealed she had secured a meeting with Health Secretary Wes Streeting to discuss improving NHS radiotherapy equipment, advocating for essential resources to tackle local health needs.
