Entries have opened for Wells Moat Boat Race after organisers confirmed the event will go ahead this year.

The annual raft race, held on the Bishop's Palace moat during the August bank holiday, had faced a period of uncertainty before its return was confirmed.

Organisers said entry forms are now live on the Wells Moat Boat Race website. Entrants will be confirmed once payment has been made.

The event, presented by Wells City Lions, sees teams race homemade rafts up and down the moat, with adult and junior categories. It is held at the Bishop's Palace by kind permission of the Bishop of Bath and Wells.

Announcing the return, organisers said: "After a period of uncertainty the Races have been confirmed as taking place again this year which is great news for the local community and all of us who enjoy racing up and down the Moat each year!!"

Teams are being urged to read the rules before entering. Organisers said there had been "a few minor amendments" to make sure the event meets insurance requirements.

Each team must be entered by the captain, with one form needed for each team. The event rules state that teams can have a maximum of eight people, with no more than six taking part in each race.

Race categories listed for the event include the Lion's Cup, Bishop's Cup, Community Challenge Cup, adult and junior obstacle races, and junior challenge events. Non-race categories include best raft design and fancy dress.

Junior crew members aged 13 to 17 must have parental permission and wear flotation aids in all races. Competitors are also being asked to read the event disclaimer and safety information before signing up.

Entries are limited and are due to close on Sunday, 16 August 2026. Any queries should be sent to [email protected].
