Wells' new mayor has started her year in office in classic style.

Cllr Denise Denis, the 652nd Mayor of Wells, attended her first official event on Sunday, 17 May, at the Vintage and Classic Tour on Cathedral Green.

She was collected from Wells Town Hall by Vivien and Ted Carver in their 2002 Rolls-Royce.

Cllr Denis said it was a "very smooth ride" to Cathedral Green.

She said: "On the way, we learnt this car was the fifth to last Rolls-Royce ever to be manufactured at Crewe.

"What a treat for us both as neither of us had ridden in a Rolls-Royce.

"Vivien and Ted were kindness itself, offering us shelter from the rather heavy downpours, and then driving us home as we had rather a lot to carry with umbrellas and gifts from the Classic Car Association."

Despite the wet weather, the mayor said the event was "a real treat".

A dark red Bristol was the winner of the Mayor's Award.

She added: "The rain did not dampen our afternoon, though we did feel very sorry for the convertibles, which were very exposed to the elements."
