Wells has a stronger run than most this week, especially if music is the main objective. Friday goes fully into queer steampunk territory at The White Hart, then Saturday changes mood with folk in Wells and a choral concert over in Wedmore, which is a fairly decent spread for one weekend.

Things start on Thursday 16 April with the Charity Night Dinner raising funds for Dorothy House Hospice Care. It is being held at Sarthi, 88 Walcot Street, Bath, from 5pm to 10pm as part of the restaurant's first anniversary. The listing says there will be a two-course set menu for £27 per person, with a raffle hosted by Dorothy House Fundraising Friends Bath Group. It is promoted on Shepton Mallet Nub News, but the confirmed location is Bath, so that is worth saying plainly rather than pretending Walcot Street has suddenly moved.

Friday 17 April is where things get more gloriously odd. In Wells, Queer Steampunk Ball featuring Professor Elemental takes over The White Hart on Sadler Street. Doors open at 7pm and the listing says tickets are £20 plus fees on Eventbrite, or £20 on the door, with a promotional code available for a limited number of tickets. The event is billed as a Victorian reimagining with Professor Elemental, Bonaroo Cabaret and the Dr Love Kozmik Light Show, with profits going to Wells Pride and Somerset 2BU. That is not exactly a quiet Friday pint, which feels like the point.

Also on Friday, Glastonbury Pagan Moot: Simon Downham-Knight First Steps on the Poison Path is on at Beckets Inn, 43 High Street, Glastonbury. The listing says it is 7.30pm for an 8pm start, all are welcome and donations are welcome too. The talk is described in the event copy as a tale involving mandrake, rum, poisoning and a demon, so nobody can claim they were lured in under false pretences.

Saturday 18 April is the busiest day of the lot. In Wells, The Gigspanner Big Band, A Unique Force In British Folk Music is at Cedars Hall, The Liberty. The listing describes the group as a major force in British folk music, with a performance style that combines roots traditions with a more experimental approach. It is one for people who like their folk music with a bit more edge than the usual polite foot-tapping.

Also on Saturday, Spring Concert. Somerset Choral Society is at St Mary's Church, Wedmore, at 7.30pm. The programme includes Elgar, Gershwin, Arthur Sullivan, Holst and Charles Stanford, and the listing says tickets are £15 for adults and £8 for under-18s from TicketSource. The same event also appears on Shepton Mallet Nub News, with the same confirmed date, venue and start time, so it is clearly getting around nearly as much as the audience might have to.

Still on Saturday, Street gets its turn with Pink Tribute at The Unity Club. The listing says members pay £3 and guests pay £5, with tickets available from the club. It is billed as "The Truth About Pink", with the promise of the big hits, a full stage show and the sort of attitude that would be a bit pointless to do halfway.

The pace drops slightly on Tuesday 21 April with Arts Society Mid Somerset Lecture on The Beatles at Caryford Hall, Castle Cary. The event begins with a short AGM at 10.30am, coffee is available from 10.15am for £1.50, members get in free and visitors pay £8. The lecture itself is "The Beatles: Here There and Everywhere" by Jamie Hayes, which is all very civilised and a noticeable change from Friday's demon-related content.

The final listing in this run is on Wednesday 22 April with Field to Food Learning Day 2026 at the Bath & West Showground. The event is part of the Royal Bath & West Society's educational work and is aimed at helping children learn where food comes from and how farming works. The listing makes clear that it is not a public event and is for local schools that have applied to attend, so this is one to admire from a distance unless you are already on the list.

That leaves a week with cabaret in Wells, a moot in Glastonbury, Pink in Street, a concert in Wedmore, a Beatles lecture in Castle Cary and a fundraiser in Bath wearing a Shepton Mallet badge. Fair enough. Anyone wanting to add their own event can use nub your event for free in Wells, nub your event for free in Glastonbury and Street or nub your event for free in Shepton Mallet.
