This year marks the 102nd anniversary of the Poppy Appeal, a cause that the Wells Royal British Legion has steadfastly backed since it began.

The local team will be busy this season, hosting stalls at Wells Market on multiple Saturdays - October 28, November 4, and November 11. The team will also have a presence in local supermarkets including Waitrose, Tesco, and Lidl, and will distribute collection tins throughout the city.

Funds raised will go towards supporting the service community and their families.

For the past three years, the Royal British Legion has been developing a more eco-friendly paper poppy. Made from responsibly sourced recycled materials, this new poppy will be available alongside traditional ones until stocks are depleted.

Wells residents interested in volunteering for the appeal can get in touch with the local organiser, Alistair McBride on 07848 110161 or via email on [email protected]. You don't need to be a Legion member or a veteran to offer your support.

The annual general meeting of the Wells Branch Royal British Legion is scheduled for November 27, 7pm, at The Venue on South Street. All are welcome to attend.

  • A short Remembrance service at the Conduit in Market Square is scheduled for Saturday, November 11, the service will begin at 10.45am and all are welcome to attend. Additionally, a civic ceremony will be held on the following day, Sunday, November 12. The ceremony will start at St Cuthbert's Church and will be followed by a two-minute silence at the war memorial at 11am. A wreath-laying ceremony will then take place, before a parade marches up High Street. The Mayor will be present to take the parade salute, as is tradition. The procession will then continue to the Harry Patch Memorial, located outside the Wells & Mendip Museum, for another wreath-laying ceremony.
