Wells football photo sparks appeal to name pre-war players
By Laura Linham 2nd Oct 2026
One name is known. Now a family is hoping Wells readers can help put names to the other faces in an old football team photograph believed to have been taken before the Second World War.
The picture is understood by the family to show Wells Wednesdays, a football club which played in the city before the war. Ivan Frederick Morgan has been identified on the left of the second row, but the names of the other people pictured remain a mystery.
The photograph has been shared by Ivan's son, who hopes someone locally might recognise a relative or have another copy tucked away.
Its precise date is uncertain, and the bottom of the surviving photograph is missing.
"Dad was part of the Wells Wednesdays," he said. "He's on the second row, but I would like to know the names of any of the others."
The appeal is also an opportunity to find out more about the team itself. Readers who know when Wells Wednesdays played, where their matches took place or which competitions they entered could help establish the story behind the photograph.
Anyone who recognises a player or has information about Wells Wednesdays is invited to contact Wells Nub News by emailing [email protected]. Please explain which person you recognise and include any dates or supporting information that could help the family piece together the team's history.
