Wells bishop Michael Beasley to join House of Lords
By Laura Linham 1st Oct 2026
The Bishop of Bath and Wells will take his seat in the House of Lords this month. Michael Beasley's introduction ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, 27 October, following his receipt of a writ of summons from the King.
He will continue as bishop while participating in debates, scrutinising legislation and voting in Parliament.
Bishop Michael said he wanted to represent Somerset's interests and work with people across faiths and political parties. He said: "I look forward to bringing my expertise in health and international development to my role."
He anticipates spending about one day a week at Westminster when Parliament is sitting. He will also spend two weeks each year in residence to lead prayers.
His seat is one of 26 reserved for Church of England bishops and archbishops, collectively known as the Lords Spiritual. Membership is linked to episcopal office rather than held for life.
