Wells firewalk sees mayor back SWEDA appeal
By Laura Linham 21st Apr 2026
The Mayor of Wells, Cllr Louis Agabani, has said he was among those who walked on fire in Wells on Friday night as part of a fundraiser for SWEDA.
In an update after the event, Cllr Agabani said the Mayoress Mary-Ellen, a number of councillors, the Town Clerk and he took part. He said the group was raising money for SWEDA, the South West Eating Disorder Association.
The firewalk took place on Cathedral Green. Wells Cathedral had urged people to come along and support the charity event, saying it would raise vital funds and awareness for people affected by eating disorders and body image concerns.
The cathedral also said the Very Reverend Toby Wright, Dean of Wells, would be among those taking part.
Cllr Agabani described the heat as "1200 Degrees, yes it was hot!!" and said it was not too late for people to donate.
SWEDA later thanked everyone who took part and supported the event, calling it "the hottest fundraiser of the year in Wells". The charity said 40 people took on the firewalk, while the mayor said he was part of a group of 45 people. The exact final participant total has not been clarified.
Donations can still be made through the SWEDA fundraiser page.
