Wells in Somerset has found itself on a list of the UK's 'most depressing' places to live, according to a satirical review by iLivehere.
But perhaps not surprisingly, it failed to take the crown, and came in at number 18 in the list of 20 places nominated.
The list named Falmouth in Cornwall as the top 'most depressing' place, included Wells among other towns such as Peterborough in Cambridgeshire and Crawley in West Sussex.
The rankings have sparked a mix of reactions, with some residents and visitors puzzled by their inclusion.
Still, Wells can console itself knowing that it has bagged several accolades that highlight its unique blend of charm and accessibility. It's celebrated for the gothic allure of Wells Cathedral, which, according to BuildWorld's analysis of over 10 million Flickr photos, emerged as the UK's most photographed building after dark, surpassing even Big Ben. Additionally, Wells was named the most accessible UK city for disabled travellers by Handicare and Age Co, recognising its outstanding provision of accessible attractions and facilities.
Furthermore, it's acclaimed as one of the UK's best destinations for stargazing, attributed to its low light pollution and clear skies. Lastly, Wells was crowned the top UK city for Christmas shopping by Which?, appreciated for its tranquil shopping experience that combines big brands with local charm, making it the ideal location for festive shopping away from the hustle and bustle of larger cities, as well as the UK's most romantic city.
