Nearly 40% of crimes in Wells over the past three years remain unresolved, raising questions about local policing and justice.

Data from November 2021 to September 2024 has highlighted how crimes in Wells have been handled, revealing that a significant proportion of cases remain unresolved or lack clear outcomes.

Of 2,803 recorded crime outcomes, 40.6% (1,138 cases) were categorised as "status update unavailable," and 25.7% (721 cases) were marked as "unable to prosecute suspect."

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said, "Several factors can influence the progression of a case, including the availability of evidence, witness cooperation, and the severity of the offence. Our officers diligently assess each report to determine the most appropriate course of action. However, it is important to note that not all crimes will result in a prosecution due to these complexities."

Crimes often face barriers that prevent them from progressing to court. Insufficient evidence is a key factor, with many cases requiring physical proof, CCTV footage, or reliable witness testimony to move forward. Without these elements, it becomes difficult to identify suspects or build a strong prosecution case. Additionally, victim and witness cooperation plays a crucial role. Fear, intimidation, or simply the desire to move on can lead to a lack of participation, stalling investigations.

Some crimes are also assessed against the public interest. For minor offences or cases involving first-time offenders, pursuing formal charges may not always be deemed necessary. Resource limitations within the police force mean that more serious cases often take priority, leaving others unresolved. Delays in the legal process can also contribute to unresolved outcomes, as court backlogs and administrative challenges can leave cases without closure for extended periods.

The data also shows that 13.2% (369 cases) are categorised as "other," encompassing a range of resolutions, and 6% (169 cases) remain "under investigation." Local resolutions, often involving community or victim-led agreements, account for 3.4% (94 cases). Meanwhile, only nine cases were recorded where a suspect was charged as part of another investigation, highlighting how few incidents lead to formal legal outcomes.

Avon and Somerset Police have emphasised their commitment to tackling crime in Wells and have called for greater community cooperation to help resolve cases. "Residents play a crucial role in providing information and working with officers to ensure successful outcomes. We urge anyone with information about a crime to come forward."
