Wells Cornish Bakery opens in former HSBC bank

Cornish Bakery has opened its new Wells branch inside the former HSBC bank in Market Place.
The bakery, which started in Mevagissey in Cornwall, has taken over the Grade II listed building at 1 Market Place.
The building has been empty since HSBC left the site. Its stone frontage, arched windows and former banking hall have now been brought back into use as a bakery and café.
Inside, the premises covers 88 sq m and can seat up to 45 customers. Cornish Bakery says more than 16 year-round local jobs have been created by the opening.
The company says the refurbishment was designed to retain the character of the former bank while giving it a new use. Original features have been kept where possible, and the former banking vault remains inside the building.
The interior combines the older features with polished concrete, steel, timber and new lighting. Original artwork by Cornwall-based designers A-Side has also been added.
The bakery will sell Cornish Bakery's pasties, sausage rolls, viennoiseries, cakes, coffee and seasonal drinks. New summer items include a Lemon Meringue Croissant, Chocolate, Banana and Peanut Butter Pastry, and an Orange and White Chocolate Chai Bun.
Managing director Mat Finch said: "We are delighted to have opened our bespoke bakery in the beautiful city of Wells. This marks an exciting investment in the high street, transforming a stunning, recently vacant property into a contemporary bakery destination for both locals and visitors.
"Historic buildings like this deserve to remain active and enjoyed by the community, and we've worked hard to preserve the character of the former bank while giving it a completely new purpose.
"We're looking forward to welcoming customers into a distinctive space where exceptional food, expertly crafted Cornish-roasted coffee and thoughtful design come together, and to becoming part of the Wells community."
The company says the Wells team will also support a local charity, which is due to be selected soon.
