Wells, along with other areas in the Mendips, is experiencing a notable increase in vehicle thefts.

To address this rising concern, local authorities are calling on residents to enhance their vehicle security.

Local police are recommending the use of alarms, security lighting, and CCTV systems to deter thieves.

"The region is facing a concerning increase in vehicle thefts," said a police spokesperson. "Residents should consider proactive security measures for their vehicles, such as installing alarms, using effective security lighting, and where possible, CCTV systems. These steps can significantly lower the chances of theft."

The police have issued several safety tips for vehicle owners in Wells:

  • Park in Well-lit Areas: Choose spots with good lighting, preferably under CCTV surveillance.
  • Use Steering Locks: These can be a strong deterrent, even for modern vehicles.
  • Install Car Alarms: Regularly check and upgrade your car alarms.
  • Secure Number Plates: Fit anti-theft screws to deter number plate theft.
  • Hide Valuables: Avoid leaving any valuables in visible areas of your car.
  • Check Your Car: Regularly ensure that your car is locked and secure.
  • Vehicle Tracking Devices: Consider installing a tracking device, particularly for high-value cars.
  • Use a Faraday pouch to block signal from your key fob.
  • Turn off keyless entry on your car if possible.
  • Keep your car keys away from doors and windows at home.

The importance of community vigilance is also being stressed. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activities immediately via the 101 or 999 services, based on the situation's urgency.
