Wells Cathedral has proudly announced the appointment of Carolyn Craig as its new Assistant Director of Music, a role she will assume from April 2024.
Carolyn Craig, currently serving as Organ Scholar of Westminster Abbey since September 2023, is set to bring her extensive musical expertise to Wells Cathedral.
Originating from Knoxville, Tennessee, and educated at Indiana and Yale Universities, Craig has an impressive musical background. She has previously held organ scholarships at Truro Cathedral and Westminster Cathedral and is noted for her busy schedule of international tours, broadcasts, and teaching. Additionally, Craig has recently been appointed as a Junior Fellow of Royal Birmingham Conservatoire from January 2024.
In her new role at Wells Cathedral, Carolyn will be the principal organist for Cathedral services, play a pivotal role in training the Choristers, and direct the Wells Cathedral Chamber Choir.
Alexander Hamilton, Acting Director of Music at Wells Cathedral, expressed his enthusiasm for Carolyn's appointment. "I am very pleased indeed that Carolyn Craig has been appointed as the new Assistant Director of Music at Wells Cathedral. We were fortunate to interview a strong field of candidates for this vital role in our busy Music Department. Carolyn is a superlative musician, and both her skill and warmth shone through during the selection process. As a former Organ Scholar of Westminster Abbey myself, I know that her work there will provide the perfect preparation for her new role here. I look forward to welcoming Carolyn to our team in Wells and to working closely alongside her when she arrives in April 2024," he said.
Andrew Nethsingha, Organist and Master of the Choristers at Westminster Abbey, and former Assistant Organist at Wells Cathedral, also shared his delight: "I am absolutely delighted that our Organ Scholar, Carolyn Craig, is to take up the post of Assistant Director of Music at Wells Cathedral in April. She is a superlative musician – exceptional as an organist, choral conductor, teacher, colleague – and most importantly, a great human being! All of us at Westminster Abbey are very proud of Carolyn's achievement, and it gives me particular personal pleasure as I held the same job in Wells thirty years ago! Well done, Carolyn!"
Carolyn Craig herself expressed her excitement about the new role: "I am honoured and delighted to have been appointed Assistant Director of Music at Wells Cathedral. Wells Cathedral has a long tradition of musical excellence, which I have admired for years, as well as an established reputation for being forward-looking. I am excited to contribute to daily worship in this historic Cathedral, and to become part of the Cathedral, School, and wider communities in Wells; the warmth of the people and place was overwhelming at the interview. Alexander Hamilton, Acting Director of Music, has led the music programme brilliantly, and it will be a privilege to join his team. I am sorry to be leaving Westminster Abbey, where I have been truly inspired, and am grateful to Andrew Nethsingha for his support. I look forward to making Wells my home."
