Wells Cathedral will begin a full restoration of its historic Grand Organ this month after mounting mechanical faults left the 5,000‑pipe instrument at risk of catastrophic failure.
The two‑year, £3 million project will see every pipe removed for cleaning, repair or replacement, with the console, pedals and stops also rebuilt to improve performance for services and recitals.
Specialist firm Harrison & Harrison has been appointed to carry out the work. Managing Director Andrew Scott called it "a privilege" to restore an organ that has evolved since the 17th century and remains central to the cathedral's life. Timothy Parsons, Director of Music at Wells Cathedral, said the renewed instrument would be "transformative," noting organists have had to "creatively cover up" faults during recent performances.
Dean of Wells, the Very Reverend Toby Wright, said: "The Grand Organ is not merely an instrument, but the living breath of Wells, binding past, present and future together in song." The Friends of Wells Cathedral have already raised nearly £2 million through donations and pledges to support the appeal.
However, organisers warn that around £1 million more is still needed to complete the restoration. Donations can be made via the Friends of Wells Cathedral Grand Organ Appeal.
