Wells Cathedral to host Sound of Wells Festival in May 2026
By Laura Linham 7th Jan 2026
The Sound of Wells Festival will return in May 2026, bringing a packed programme of classical music and choral performances to the city's historic cathedral.
Running from Wednesday, 6 May to Sunday, 10 May, the festival will showcase the full musical life of Wells Cathedral — from choral evensong to lunchtime recitals and special concerts, including a live, improvised soundtrack to a silent film.
Worship remains at the festival's heart, with services led by the Cathedral Choristers, Vicars Choral, Song Squad, Youth Choir and Chamber Choir.
Highlights include:
- Wednesday, 6 May: Wells Cathedral School Composers concert, evensong with the Youth Choir, and an evening silent film with live organ soundtrack.
- Thursday, 7 May: Choral Scholars lunchtime concert and a performance of Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610.
- Friday, 8 May: Musical outreach event with local primary schools and evensong marking the United States Semi-Quincentennial.
- Saturday, 9 May: Oratorio Society concert and evensong with orchestra.
- Sunday, 10 May: Festival Eucharist with a new music commission, followed by Charles Wood centenary evensong and festival bellringing.
A full programme and ticket details will be released in early 2026.
